WEEK AHEAD: Events for the week of Monday, August 31

School opens on Wednesday, September 2, for all Rochester city school students, prekindergarten through grade 12.

The Northeast Neighborhood Community Council will hold a candidates night public forum for the Northeast City Council seat and Monroe County Legislature’s 29th district at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2. The event will be held at Franklin High School, 950 Norton Street. BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

Family and friends of slain Rochester Police Officer Daryl Pierson will hold a candlelight vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of Pierson’s death at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, at the Public Safety Building, 185 Exchange Boulevard. Rochester police officers are also expected to attend.

Pierson was killed in the line of duty by Thomas Johnson III, who has been given a life sentence without parole.

Several members of the Pierson family are expected to speak at the event that will take place around the Fallen Police Officers Memorial.

The vigil is open to the public, and those attending are encouraged to bring a candle or other forms of light. BY CHRISTINE CARRIE FIEN
