Robbie Fulks' alternative brand of country is highly accessible even for those who aren't country fans. The guy is a flatpicking master and can absolutely tear it up on an acoustic guitar, and his singing is pretty darn good, to boot. Couple that with his non-typical lyrical themes and you have an eccentric musical genius. Aside from improvisations of his own songs, he's also known to break out covers of Michael Jackson, Shania Twain, and Cher, among others. There's also a good amount of humor mixed into his shows, so count on some laughs at this one.
Robbie Fulks plays with Redd Volkaert at Abilene Bar and Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way, on Sunday, June 7. 6 p.m. $20. abilenebarandlounge.com; robbiefulks.com.
