Urban Action 5/8

This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

An era of cyberwar

Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library will present a review of "The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage, and Fear in the Cyber Age" on Tuesday, May 14.

The book, by New York Times national security correspondent David E. Sanger, details how Russian hackers got into the Democratic National Committee's computers. The hacking of the DNC hacking was only the tip of the sword, however. Russian hackers were also able to get into networks at the White House and the State Department, and they planted bugs in US electrical and nuclear plants that would give them the ability to switch power off in for large parts of the country.

Sanger says cyberweapons have transformed global politics more than any threat since the atomic bomb.

Rochester Institute of Technology assistant professor Benjamin Banta will give the review. The event will be held at Central Library, Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Avenue, from 12:15 to 12:52 p.m.

Changing outlooks on mental health

The annual Reel Mind Film and Theatre Series examines stories of hope and recovery from mental illness with the goal of reducing stigma and changing views about mental health.

This year's series opens with the documentary "Evelyn," by Orlando von Einsiedel, on Tuesday, May 14. In the film von Einsiedel, his siblings, and parents go on a road trip in remembrance of the brother and son who took his own life. They also confront something they have never talked about.

The second film, "The S Word," showing on Tuesday, May 21, weaves stories from LGBTQ, African American, and Asian communities about trauma stemming from rejection and isolation. The film also looks at survival and advocacy work to change national attitudes about suicide.

Both films will be shown at the Cinema Theater, 957 South Clinton Avenue, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $8. More on the series, which runs through June: www.reelmindfilmfest.org.
