MUSIC: For most people December 14 will be just another Friday. But to the legions of “Lord of the Rings” fans, it marks the release of the first of the long-awaited “Hobbit” movies, and a return to Middle-Earth on the silver screen. If you aren’t too sleepy from seeing the film at midnight (like the good hobbit you are), make sure to head on out of your hobbit hole under the hill and down to DJ Energon’s cosplay hobbit-themed dance party Friday night. Throw on your best dwarf beard, hobbit feet, or Gandalf hat (Oppa Gandalf style, anybody?) and get ready to party like a bunch of immortal elves. MUSIC: Top 40 station 98 PXY is throwing its annual holiday concert this week. The 2012 Jingle Jam will feature a slew of chart-topping performers and an after party at Tilt Nightclub following the tunes. Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Flo Rida, whose 2007 single “Low” earned him worldwide recognition, is the biggest name on the marquee. Boys Like Girls, the young, power-pop quartet from Andover, Massachusetts, is among the headliners as well. MUSIC: Local folk musician Bogs Visionary Orchestra will be throwing a bash of a CD release party tonight at Bernuzio’s (122 East Ave., 7:30 p.m.), releasing its 4th album, (and playing it in its entirety) “Alas, Alas, Alas: The Birth of Hieronymus Bogs.” Featuring a patchwork of local musicians, the release is Bogs’ first made in Rochester, and an event you don’t want to miss.
THEATER: Take a trip back in time before Google, and see how the International Broadcasting Company’s reference department librarians conducted research. “The Desk Set” explores this unique environment and how it evolves when a male efficiency expert breaches the female-dominated realm. MUSIC: Some of the best things in life come in fours: four leaf clovers, four day weekends, the Fantastic Four, and even the four seasons. Tonight you’ll get a chance to check out Four Voices, an opera based program at RIT (1 Lomb Memorial Dr., Ingle Auditorium, rit.org). Featuring three Eastman vocal students, the program will include a local take on Lee Hoiby’s “Bon Appetit.” Music starts at 8 p.m., tickets run $5-$20.
DANCE: Take part in an integrative combination of the theatre department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), RIT’s 3D Digital Design Professor Marla Schweppe, and PUSH Physical Theatre at “PUSHinterPLAY of Art, Culture and Technology.” 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Funded by a grant from the Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation to support projects that integrate arts and culture with technology.
