This past winter was particularly brutal and seemingly never-ending. One of the only positive takeaways is that it inspired a wildly imaginative new track from Rochester studio project No Glitter. Snowed in after one of the many blizzards suffered by the region, musical polymath Billy Martin challenged himself to capture the chilly isolationist vibes in a track titled โ€œThe Snow Globe is Forever and a Day.โ€

No Glitterโ€™s productions are always top notch, but this particular track finds more open groove and negative space for driving drums and vintage synths to play with some serious sonic alchemy. Itโ€™s a far cry from the last release โ€œVasโ€ in 2024, which was an exercise in acoustic indie songcraft.

โ€œThe Snow Globe is Forever and a Dayโ€ is a galloping horseback ride through the tundra of classic rockโ€™s finest contributions. Think Pink Floyd, but it goes well beyond that. In the way that the greatest art channels the artistโ€™s influences into something new and uniquely their own, this track embodies an almost prog-rock element that harkens back to Deep Purple and King Crimson. There is also an unmistakable contemporary psychedelic influence from Queens of the Stone Age and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

The track starts with analog synth patches flipping through octaves and setting a stage for ambient drums and organ. The beat drops with a melancholic guitar progression, then the gallop begins, and the real ride starts as the melodies start winding around the guitars in a sonic space odyssey.

Poetic as they are, the entirety of the lyrics paint an image of longing, isolation and perseverance โ€” a metaphor for other everyday struggles. Had I known you could be inspired this hard by the drab, grey, cold monotony of winter I wouldโ€™ve asked Santa for a synthesizer.
