ART/TECH | Rochester Mini Maker Faire

The Rochester Mini Maker Faire returns this week for its fourth annual showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, spotlighting not just the shiny end results, but also the process and the learning along the way. The first Maker Faire was founded in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area by the editors of "Make:" magazine, and has grown into a world-wide network of events. Rochester's faire is presented by New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education (NYSCATE), and organizers have nicknamed it "the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth." Last year's event hosted 130 maker exhibits and drew about 2,200 attendees.

Though "mini" is in its title, there's nothing little about it. This year's Maker Faire features more than 120 established and emerging local makers alike and their wide range of creative endeavors in the fields of science and tech, urban farming and sustainability, alternative energy, hand-made crafts, music, and more. Engineers and artists will show off their rockets and robots, mermaid tails, and Morris dances. The family-friendly event also features educational workshops and installations galore.

Rochester Mini Maker Faire will be held on Saturday, November 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rochester Riverside Convention Center (123 East Main Street). Advanced tickets are $9 for individuals and $30 for family passes, which admit two adults and up to three children ages 5 to 18 (children ages 4 and younger are admitted free with a paid adult). Day-of prices at the door are $12 per individual or $40 for family passes. 478-6898;
