The most striking thing about Dawn Upshaw’s performance at Eastman School of Music on
Tuesday was the warmth and accessibility of the soprano’s voice. Giving a recital as part of the Kilbourn Concert Series, Upshaw’s tone was earnest and personal, and devoid of pretension or blustery vibrato.

MODERN CLASSICAL | Musica Nova
Brad Lubman has led Musica Nova, Eastman School of Music’s contemporary classical ensemble, for more than 20 years. During that time, the in-demand conductor has shaped the group as a consistently insightful interpreter of 20th- and 21st- century compositions. On Thursday, Lubman and Musica Nova will honor the memory of the recently departed Oliver Knussen. […]
AMERICANA | Durham County Poets
Since their 2017 Rochester jazz festival performance, the Durham County Poets have been consistent visitors to the Flower City, bringing unforced, folksy charm to attentive audiences. The quintet from Québec returns this Friday with a diverse brand of roots music that includes blues, folk, gospel, and elements of jazz. This Canadian band definitely get Americana. […]
CLASSICAL | Rochester Oratorio Society
In its season-opening concert, the Rochester Oratorio Society will present two of classical music’s most cherished melody makers in a sacred context. Led by Artistic Director Eric Townell, the ROS will sing Schubert’s Mass in G, as well as Mendelssohn’s Cantata from “Hymn of Praise.” Here, Schubert’s gift for emotional immediacy and vibrant harmonic language […]
Willfully weird
Joe Tunis certainly has the look of an RIT alum, computer software developer, and family man who’s played his fair share of Frisbee golf. But it’s also the look of a DIY entrepreneur who still operates the same fledgling record company for indie rock and experimental music that he started in April 1994.
AMERICANA | Folkfaces Fest
Folkfaces Fest has a strong DIY vibe, but it ain’t small potatoes. Presented by the beloved Buffalo band Folkfaces and its charismatic frontman Tyler Westcott, the lineup is a sonic smorgasbord of nearly 50 acts, featuring many of the Western New York folk scene’s movers and shakers. Rochester concertgoers will recognize Matthew O’Brian, Jackson Cavalier, […]
SINGER-SONGWRITER | The Spirit Room One-Year Anniversary Show
In just a year, The Spirit Room has already established itself as a premier destination for listening to compelling music and poetry performances while sipping craft cocktails. In addition to providing an important platform for Rochester-area artists, The Spirit Room has also made a conscious effort to present socially conscious art that represents the experiences […]
AVANT-JAZZ | Ken Thomson Sextet
As a member of groups like the contemporary classical Bang on a Can All-Stars, punky jazz upstart Gutbucket, and experimental jazz outfit Slow/Fast, Ken Thomson has been ignoring genre labels for years. Relentlessly creative and always musically curious, the clarinetist-sax player will bring his incomparable sound to Bop Shop Records this Friday, in support of […]
HIP-HOP | MF DOOM Tribute
MF DOOM is the larger-than-life, villainous alter ego of influential rapper Daniel Dumile. His smooth, conversationaI flow, clever wordplay, and quirky, jazz and funk-infused beats are reminiscent of music by A Tribe Called Quest and J Dilla. This Friday at the Bug Jar, Rochester rap-jazz collective Claude Bennington’s Fever Dream will pay homage to the […]
ROCK | Our Lady Peace
Canadian alt-rock band Our Lady Peace has been cranking out anthems for a long time. It’s crazy to think that the group’s cathartic, classic 90’s album “Clumsy” came out over 20 years ago. This Thursday at Anthology, OLP will bring its arena-ready sound, but it’s not just a nostalgia trip. Touring in front of its […]
CLASSICAL | RPO with Jean Thibaudet
No American composer has merged jazz and classical music as successfully as George Gershwin. On Wednesday, illustrious French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will join the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Ward Stare in an all-Gershwin celebration. Thibaudet’s elegant and majestic playing style will be an ideal fit for “Concerto in F,” which Gershwin largely composed […]
INDIE FOLK | The Western Den
You don’t just hear the beguiling music of folk outfit The Western Den — you feel it. Anchored by the creative tandem of Chris West and Deni Hlavinka (I see what you did there), these are the kinds of tender, wistful songs you might listen to by candlelight, with a bittersweet tear in your eye. […]
