After the untimely death of the legendary Bob Marley in 1981, Ashton “Family Man” Barrett took The Wailers’ baton. Barrett still runs the legendary group. Though the band hasn’t released any new material in a spell, it still keeps up a heavy touring schedule. Simply one of the best. The Wailers, Root Shock, The Buddhahood, […]

INDIE ROCK | Muler
Every now and again, Rochester’s Muler pokes its head out to prove there are plenty of arrows left in their indie quiver. Muler, in essence, possesses a sound that’s more than just “indie,” but that’s the only term that comes close, without having to dismantle your record collection. The band encompasses the dynamic push-and-pull of […]
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL | Alison Pipitone Band
Buffalo’s Alison Pipitone is a straight-up, straight-ahead barroom rock ‘n’ roller. Her music is like a rough-and-rowdy, sawdust-strewn soundtrack for blue-collar romeos, and as she puts it, “Dancing Girls on the Tables.” Some might call the music “Americana.” I say we drop the “a” at the end. Let the folkies keep it. Pipitone plays sheer […]
The F Word: Frank gets burned by holy water
Last Thursday, Significant Other burned down the Record Archiveโs Backroom barn with its funkified drive. People were on their feet, people were on each otherโs feet, people were on the tables, guzzling beer and wine and jumping for Joy, but she wouldnโt come down off the chandelier.
Album review: ‘Queen Shade & etc’
Beef Gordon ‘Queen Shade & etc’ Self-released beefgordon.bandcamp.com If you dig the late Wesley Willis, then you’ll love Beef Gordon’s debut “Queen Shade & etc,” which comes out on Friday, June 14. This album took guts to record, making haunting electronic tunes with the help of a Casio MT-68 keyboard. The clear, overtly smooth tone […]
Album review: ‘Blue Darling’
Aaron Lipp & The Slacktones ‘Blue Darling’ Self-released on Temple Cabin Records aaronlipp.com The sweet country-swing emanating from the grooves of Aaron Lipp and the Slacktones’ brand new single is intoxicating. Is it Lipp’s haphazard phrasing? The soft moan of the pedal steel? The casual 2/4 lope to and fro on the string bass? Yes, […]
Rockin’ the house, indoors and out
Frank offers a few musical options for the summertime
MODERN JAZZ | Aaron Staebell & Beverly
Check out the video clip on Rochester jazz drummer Aaron Staebell’s website, and you get an idea of what he’s about and why you should be about him. The musical construction he uses to define infinity doesn’t telegraph or tease, but satisfies completely when it arrives. It’s an unexpected journey without a map or flashlight. […]
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL | Fairport Steel Rail Revival
What’s with rock ‘n’ roll’s fascination with trains? “Blood on the Tracks,” “Mystery Train,” “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” and so on. Trains represent a ticket to ride or a ticket out of here. In the case of Fairport Steel Rail Revival, it’s a bunch of bands that adhere to, for the most part, the driving rhythm […]
Album review: ‘Take Care of My Love’
Katie Jones ‘Take Care of My Love’ Self-released katiejones.bandcamp.com Katie Jones’s new album, “Take Care of My Love,” is a study in patience between its analog recording and the digital work that went in afterwards to complete it, as well as patience with the rural strain that envelops the listener. “Take Care of My Love” […]
The F Word: An apology to Margaret Explosion
People who brandish cell phones at shows are distracting and disappointing. Put the phone down and dig the show, sluggo. Live in the now. But this isnโt a rant at millennial meatheads and their all-important tools of hipster oblivion. This is an apology to Margaret Explosion.
Jesse Sprinkle records new album with RACS students
Itโs a fire drill of kids bouncing about as if they were made of rubber. Itโs loud, full of shrieks and shouts and little ones running about. This lively bunch consists of boys and girls attending the Rochester Academy Charter School, or RACS, in Irondequoit, waiting for their weekly music class to start with Jesse Sprinkle.
