Celebrating the art of the short film, RIFF presents a program of films that pack as much compelling plot, character, and visual interest as a traditional feature in only a fraction of the time.
Movie Previews
Film preview: ‘Wild Nights with Emily’
With a tone that feels like โMasterpiece Theatreโ by way of โDrunk History,โ Madeleine Olnekโs โWild Nights with Emilyโ is a thrilling effort to rescue Dickinson from the narrative thatโs defined her. Olnekโs vision is a far cry from the image of a miserable, sickly recluse thatโs been popularized over the years.
Film preview: ‘The Exploits of Elaine’
The Finger Lakes Film Trail is a new consortium project that will spotlight the regionโs historical and cultural contributions in the development of the early motion picture industry. The project will sponsor an ongoing calendar of events, starting with this weekโs screening of episodes from silent film serial โThe Exploits of Elaine.โ
Preview: Salam Film Series
Commemorating the lives of the victims of the atrocities at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in New Zealand, the Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman Museum will present the Salam Film Series in partnership with the Islamic Center of Rochester.
Film preview: One Take Film Festival
The 2019 iteration of OTFF includes documentaries about conflict refugees, the Satanic Temple, the even more infamous Steve Bannon, and Toni Morrison.
Film preview: ‘The Public’
The film’s central debate is a fascinating one: What is a library that can’t serve the most basic needs of its patrons, and what are the limits of its obligation to its patrons?
Film preview: ‘Shazam!’
Like a lot of big action flicks released these days, “Shazam!” shows the influence of Amblin-style 80’s family-adventures. It’s a delightful cross between “The Goonies” and a superhero version of “Big.”
Film preview: ‘Hotel Mumbai’
Strictly speaking, โHotel Mumbaiโ isnโt a horror movie, though in many ways it shares a similar purpose. In showing us what society fears at our particular moment in time, and on some level seeking to understand it, the film attempts a sort of exorcism.
Film preview: ‘Gloria Bell’
A showcase for the wonderful Julianne Moore, the film is a character study of a person we seldom see in the movies these days: a confident woman over 50.
Film preview: ‘The Wedding Guest’
A thriller that’s surprisingly low on thrills. Even strong performances from its two leads can’t turn “The Wedding Guest” into an event worth the trouble of attending.
Film preview: ‘Cat Video Fest 2019’
Filled to the brim with non-stop cat antics and feline escapades, Cat Video Fest will be screening locally at the Little Theatre Saturday, March 9, with a second showing Sunday, March 10. For the event, The Little will be partnering with Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester.
Film preview: ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’
A genuinely inspiring story of a young boy’s ingenuity and how putting knowledge in the hands of those who need it the most can make all the difference in the world.
