City Council Vice President Adam McFadden is joining the group of Democratic candidates campaigning for the late Louise Slaughter’s House seat.

McFadden will announce his candidacy at 5:30 p.m. today at Brue Coffee, 960 Genesee Street.

“I really think that the Democratic Party should have an open and honest debate and discussion about who should replace Louise,” McFadden said during an interview this morning.

Slaughter served with honor for 30 years, but the 25th Congressional District is different than when she first took office, McFadden said. The party should have a plethora of candidates from different backgrounds and with different ideologies, who should make their case for why they should sit in Slaughter’s seat, he said.

McFadden, who was first elected to City Council in 2003, says his platform should come from the people, though there are issues and areas he wants to focus on: pay equality, poverty rates and their impact on education, and opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship.

Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle and Brighton Town Board member Robin Reynolds Wilt have already announced their runs. Rochester City School Board President Van White and former television news reporter and mayoral candidate Rachel Barnhart are considering whether to enter the race.

  1. Congratulations Adam on your running for Louise’s seat. You have big shoes to fill! When I came back from the trenches and wanted to bring my Mei Ling over Louise and her staff were the only ones who helped. Everyone sneered at me and called me a baby killer but Louise made sure that true love could conquer prejudice. You will be getting my vote and let me know if you need help cleaning out Louise’s closet!

  2. I feel Ms. Slaughter ought to be respected by who we nominate to replace her. Perhaps Fran Weinberg, Tom Ferraro? Mr. McFaddens local expertise should except its power locally. He has no clout or discernible widespread achievements for our area. He is a necessary voice where local civil rights issues are in focus, but I think he lacks the polish of some of our other representatives, and Ive used to become the joe influence that she was. Dont give me any racist bull crap about this either. We want to deal real, feel real.
