People have hated the East Avenue Wegmans parking lot since it was constructed. Navigating it
by car can be a nightmare., and to people on foot, it can feel dangerous.
Making matters worse, apparently, was that some people were using it as a short-cut between
University and East Ave.

So now Wegmans has installed barriers on the parking lot’s main vehicle path between the two
streets. If you drive in from University hoping to short-cut it over to East, you drive in a few
rows and then have to turn left, wend your way up toward the store, over to the next row, and
then back to the right, past the barriers.

If you’re looking for a shortcut, that shortcut is now a timesuck. But Wegmans’ attempt to
improve things has drawn a lot of public ridicule, so we tried it out ourselves.

  1. What I see when I am in East Ave Wegmans parking lot: several cars constantly cruising around hunting for a better parking spot, cars parked in driving lanes waiting for someone to come out of the store, drivers not staying to the right while moving around the lot etc. These are all driver based problems, not parking lot design problems. All these driver issues cause back ups and other issues.

  2. I won’t go to a Wegmans anywhere unless it’s at 9PM on a Wednesday night. Less is more.

  3. A VERY bad idea. Those using Wegmans parking lot for a short cut do not interfer with shoppers to any great degree. Putting up a barricade will simply mean that they’ll drive around it using the parking aisles, which WILL tie up traffic. Also, the barricade WILL be a major inconvenience for those of us shopping there who are driving from one side of the lot to the other looking for a parking space. Hopefully some one in Wegmans’ management will figure this out soon and get rid of this roadblock. The solution to the parking lot problems, real and imaginary, is for the city to return Probert street to a two-way street and ban all on-street parking.

  4. It’s an improvement. Definitely. Probably been there 5 times since the change and it is much easier to get in and out.
