Fall Guide 2019
To many of us culture enthusiasts, autumn is the most magical time of the year. Sure, the cooler temps are comfortably cozy and fall flavors are seriously palatable, but it’s also the top of the season for theater, visual arts, classical music, and other cultural offerings. The arts community comes fully alive again after a relatively slow spell.
Three Green candidates think they can win
You might have assumed that the competition for the seats on City Council was locked up in the Democratic Primary in June. Rochesterโs such a heavily Democratic city that the partyโs primaries are considered the real election. But Green Party candidates Alex White, Chris Edes, and David Sutliff-Atias strongly disagree. White in particular bristles at the idea that heโs running as a third-party candidate.
Fringe Festival Guide 2019
The eighth annual Rochester Fringe Festival kicks off Tuesday, September 10, and continuing its trend of expanding by a full day each year, has reached a stretch of 12 days. This yearโs theme is โLeap A Little,โ with organizers encouraging audiences to get out of their comfort zones, whether that be the kinds of art you show up to take in, or the new-to-you cultural venues around the city.
Life beyond the campus

Though she says she came from a “good home,” […]
The people’s pitch: Cricket and Rochester
Nurtured by immigrants from India and the Caribbean, cricket is one of the cityโs oldest sporting traditions. Current cricketers are hoping some of their children will follow their lead.
Intimacy director defines consent on stage
J.C. “Jace” Meyer-Crosby is an intimacy director, working to establish a safe, respectful, and creative environment for scenes that require close physical contact between performers. It’s a relatively new term in the arts world, let alone locally.
Forfeiting bail
Bail by its very nature is inequitable. People who have the cash to post it are able to buy their freedom โ even if it’s temporary โ while people of limited means have to stay in jail. Examples of the disparity aren’t hard to find. On July 18, a man was booked into the Monroe […]
Dade takes over
It’s reasonable to wonder whether Terry Dade knows what he’s gotten himself into as the new superintendent of Rochester’s schools. But Dade, who is days into a job that is certain to test him, is hardly naive. He’s keenly aware of the public’s skepticism, frustration, and disillusionment about the district. And in a recent interview […]
