The issues raised in “The Humans” are reminiscent of conversations every family has at some point — financial, age, health, careers — and director Mark Cuddy guides the ensemble’s chemistry in such an authentic way that it’s easy to forget there isn’t a real family onstage.

Geva presents the world premiere of Lila Rose Kaplan’s semi-autobiographical play about a daughter’s relationship with her high-functioning addict father.
Jazz Festival has new venues, club-pass changes
It’s only October, and there’s already big news in local jazz. The CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival announced major changes this morning for its 2019 event, including two new venues – Parcel 5 and Geva – and a more user-friendly club pass policy. The festival, which will run from June 21 to 29, will stage […]
Theater review: ‘Thurgood’ at Geva
Lester Purry is a theatrical force, bringing Thurgood Marshall to life through expert physicality, an impressively dense amount of memorized material, and a true commitment to the portrayal of an icon of American history.
Frank reviews ‘2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick: A Dirk Darrow Investigation’
Say, I’ll be honest: They had me with the fedora. Even when old school detective imagery and language moves toward pastiche, I still love it. And of course if the hat didn’t get me, the title most definitely did. Australian comedian, storyteller, and mentalist Dick Darrow (Tim Motley) was a side-splitter, rip snorter, a rapid […]
Geva announces 2018-19 season
Geva Theatre Center unveiled its 2018-19 season this afternoon, a lineup that again includes a popular older favorite and several new works. In the season, Geva continues its commitment to staging premieres of new works and to multi-cultural works. It starts its season with a production of the smash 60’s hit “Hair” in its principal […]
‘The Agitators’ explores the friendship of Fred and Sue
Outside the Susan B. Anthony House on Madison Street, there’s a life-size statue created by Pepsy Kettavong depicting Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony having tea. The two were only a few years apart in age and, in true Rochester fashion, of course they knew one another. Through November 12, Geva Theatre Center is staging […]
Theater review: ‘Smart People’ at Geva
There are a few topics people don’t bring up in casual conversation, as a rule — politics, sexual orientation, money, and race, to name a few. For heaven’s sake, just stick to asking about the weather, weekend plans, and the welfare of children or pets. Those topics, for most, are easy and non-offensive. But playwright […]
Theater review: Geva’s ‘Private Lives’
Noël Coward penned his hit play “Private Lives” in less than a week, yet more than 80 years later the show remains a crowd-pleaser in theatrical seasons around the world. Through April 16, Geva Theatre Center is staging “Private Lives” on its Wilson Stage. Coward — who also wrote “Hay Fever” and “Blithe Spirit” — […]
Geva announces its 2017-18 season
It’s the era of Lin-Manuel Miranda, if you haven’t noticed. Geva Theatre Center on Monday announced its 2017-18 season, with Miranda’s Tony Award-winning “In the Heights” opening the Wilson Stage Series, September 5 through October 8. (The Rochester Broadway Theatre League announced last week that the actor-writer’s “Hamilton” will be coming to Rochester in its […]
Theater review: Geva’s ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’
When “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” debuted 50 years ago, it was the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Interracial marriage was still illegal in 16 states, and the subject made a lot of people uncomfortable. Like a true artist, filmmaker Stanley Kramer saw a chance to begin a conversation, so he assembled an all-star […]
Theater review: “The Lake Effect” at Geva
Sometimes the person you need to meet is not the person you’d choose to encounter. That is, in essence, the premise of “The Lake Effect,” the 2013 play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph. A beautifully unfolding chamber drama, directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh, “The Lake Effect” gives audiences an unflinching glimpse into a family fractured […]
