Question Bridge discussion: Led by RIT’s MOCHA
The latest panel in a series of discussions surrounding “Question Bridge: Black Males” was hosted by 10 members of RIT’s MOCHA (Men of Color, Honor, and Ambition.) This panel, held Wednesday, October 29, brought out many of Rochester’s youth and gave them an opportunity to share their opinions with attendees. After a short clip of […]

This week’s iteration of the “Question Bridge: Black Males” conversation series, held on Wednesday, October 15, was themed “Community Art Perspective,” with a panel featuring artist and community arts organizer, Shawn Dunwoody; filmmaker and president of UTCHAT VISION, Shabaka Mu Ausar; and dancer and founder-artistic director of PeaceArt International, Thomas Warfield. “State of the City”
The work of a gallerist is never done. Immediately following the de-installation of Rochester Contemporary’s annual “6×6” fundraising exhibition — which required the patching of tens of thousands of thumbtack holes — the staff at Rochester Contemporary went and put hundreds more pinholes in the walls, in order to present the massive installations featured in […]
“Dirty Dozen: The Outlaw Printmakers”
Though traditional methods of printmaking are arguably outdated forms of creating and mass-producing images, the medium has remained a fresh art form through subject matter and use, and is found everywhere from cottage-industry t-shirt printing, to concert posters, to fine art editions. The current exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center brings together the diverse work […]
Raiders of a lost art
Rochester Contemporary’s current show, “signals_now_,” was created in collaboration with Signal Culture, a new experimental media studio soon to be located in Owego, New York, run by artists Debora and Jason Bernagozzi. The exhibit showcases four artists who will be among the first to participate in Signal Culture’s residency program, and who each question the […]
ART: The end is the beginning
Even though autumn heralds the close of the year, and the death, decay, or otherwise slumberfest of nature, to me the crisp, fresh air always feels like a beginning. This probably comes in part from our everlasting association of autumn with going back to school. Now that school is back in session, many of the […]
ART REVIEW: “State of the City: Street-ish”
Four young artists are the stars of “Street-ish,” a show of contemporary work that is informed by street art and culture, though was created within a studio practice. Now in its sixth season, this edition of Rochester Contemporary’s “State of the City” exhibition series was co-curated by RoCo’s Executive Director, Bleu Cease, and Memorial Art […]
“Eat It: Artists Explore Food & Consumption”
During the Industrial Revolution, we moved systematically away from traditional, deliberate ways of feeding ourselves. And as this basic element of survival slipped from ours into bureaucratic hands, we became less reliant on our communities for genuine needs, and our relations grew brittle for lack of practice. There are attempts to reverse this, but we […]
ARTS: Rochester Contemporary Art Center buys its building
Exciting news concerning the future of Rochester Contemporary Art Center was announced tonight amid the 300 works that make up the 22nd Annual Members Exhibition. Art Center Executive Director Bleu Cease thanked the people who have supported the institution throughout its nearly 36 years before he released the news that RoCo, which throughout its history […]
Art Feature: Out of place
Immediately following its annual fundraising, crowd-pleasing “6×6” exhibition, Rochester Contemporary has deftly shifted gears to present the annual “State of the City” show, during which the art space transforms into a forum for discussing the status of Upstate New York cities as they move toward an uncertain future. Last year, the exhibit explored urban planning and the impact of the Inner Loop on Rochester (and how similar roadways impacted other cities), as well as the disputed future of the roadway. This year, the show focuses on how artists and activists are redefining public space.
