Advocates urge Rochester district to balance cuts

The Children’s Agenda wants the district to pare back cuts to special education and English language learner programs.

Under the deal, the district would receive a $35 million loan to help bridge its budget gap.

Commissioners said cutting employees was their only option to close a budget deficit

Among the 152 teachers that may be laid off, 21 of them are black.

The Rochester Teachers Association said a third of city school student body could lose at least one teacher from the district’s proposed layoffs.

Teacher’s union leaders called for the board to delay its vote and to try to get extra funding from the state.

The district overspent last year’s budget and is now trying to address the deficit.
