Everyone’s been talking about the rare solar eclipse that will sweep across North America on Monday, August 21. If you can’t travel to an area of the US where you can witness it live, head over to the Rochester Museum and Science Center (657 East Avenue) to get the most out of the astronomical phenomenon. There will be a free viewing at the Strasenburgh Planetarium between 1:14 p.m. and 3:52 p.m., with the eclipse reaching maximum coverage at 2:35 p.m.

Immediately before the eclipse viewing, RMSC will hold a Solar Eclipse Star Show at 12 p.m., during which attendees will learn about how eclipses happen. In the days leading up to the eclipse, RMSC will hold a family program called “Exploring Science: Earth and Space,” beginning on Friday, August 18, through Monday, August 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will make clouds, hypothesize about extraterrestrial life, and learn about gravity.

Admission to the eclipse viewing is free, but proper eyewear is required and can be purchased for $2. The Solar Eclipse Star Show is recommended for older children and adults, and tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students with ID, and free for children. For more information, visit rmsc.org or call 271-4320.

  1. The eclipse has, I believe,a very useful psychological lesson for us. I think it is about stretching our interest, our attention spans, our curiosity.

The eclipse is predictable. We know what will happen, moment by moment. But focusing on it, will give us a sense of interest and excitement. Perhaps we can stretch our every day interest and curiosity, as well. Maybe we can overcome boredom and stress in learning, in school and in work, with practice.

(If, instead, we become bored and disinterested in school, in work and in life, we suffer the consequences of our neglect. For example, I believe that school failure is strongly related to boredom, which leads to a lack of effort.)

This eclipse is a great exercise in building interest, and in overcoming disinterest, for a lifetime of success. Pay attention and feel the awe, and do the work for success!

    Eclipse, general definition:

to become much more important and noticeable than something.
