Antiques are the name of the game this week in Mumford, when PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow” rolls into the Genesee Country Village & Museum to film on June 17. The production will host thousands of collectors looking to get their items appraised — and to explore what local spots have to offer.

Rick McKay opened McKay’s Antiques on Caledonia’s Main Street, just a few miles from the museum, 15 years ago. But the building that houses the shop dates back to the 1890s.

“It’s been just about everything in the world,” McKay said. “It was a car showroom on the other side when cars didn’t weigh very much.”

Now, McKay’s has three floors of collectibles from 26 different vendors to show off to visitors coming to town for “Antiques Roadshow,” including some vintage New York Yankees banners from the 1980s and ‘90s, and about 1,000 vinyl records.

“I never wanted to actually lock things up like they do at Lowe’s and Home Depot,” McKay said. “You can actually pick it up and touch it (here).”

“We’re eclectic,” he continued. “We don’t really specialize in anything, except that you don’t know what you’re going to find in here.”

Down the street from the Genesee Country Village & Museum — and about a mile and a half from McKay’s — sits Donna Piasecki’s Primitive Country Gifts. Opened nearly 20 years ago, it’s the latest shop to occupy the 1840s building that once housed a general store.

It also boasts the distinction of being where the very first telephone in Mumford was located.

“We were fortunate to come across the old Mumford post office sign. It didn’t originate from this building, but it was at one of the other buildings from years ago,” Piasecki said. “We have the original deli case. It was built in 1903, I think. So yeah, a lot of history here.”

Piasecki works with vendors from Alden, Fairport and Livonia, and she treks to Pennsylvania and Ohio for handmade pieces she proudly displays in the shop.

Piasecki will show them off, along with enamelware, birdhouses and furniture, during extended hours this week.

Per the Genesee Country Village & Museum, the “Antiques Roadshow” filming is not open to the public, and no tickets are available onsite; attendees have already been chosen. The special will air in 2027.
