Have you ever felt a love so powerful you’d be willing to risk everything, including sense of self, just to stay close? Rochester native electronic metal group Glasswaves explores that love in the headbanging track “fvck.me.up,” released April 21 with their new label, SharpTone Records. A swirling, synth-y background and vocals from Noah Rich (halfway between a sultry growl and a sweet croon) tease listeners into the explosive chorus. It’s gritty and melodic, mimicking the oscillation between devotion and destruction.
Glasswaves was originally formed by Rich and guitarist Owen Miller in May 2023, after they parted ways with a different band in search of a new blueprint and style of music. With the addition of Brendan Curtis on bass, the duo became a trio and Glasswaves has been a powerhouse on the metal side of the Rochester music scene. From their first release “Dead Dreams” to “fvck.me.up,” Glasswaves provide a sound that is focused, emotional and heavy, reminiscent of bands like Bad Omens and Sleep Token.
A music video to accompany the post-hardcore love song was also released on April 21, its haunting imagery meshing with shots of a performance that pulls listeners further into the song. Should we mosh or should we dance? The track’s versatility leaves it up to listeners to choose how best to rock out.
Itching to catch them live after diving into the glitchy new single? The trio will be performing with metal core group What Lies Below on July 11 at The Lost Horizon in Syracuse, just a short road trip from Rochester. With the new label, dynamic music spreading across genres and open arms welcoming fans in, Glasswaves is one to keep an eye on. —LEAH JOY
