Want to buy an old newspaper building?
The Democrat and Chronicle reports that its 55 Exchange Boulevard building is being put up for sale by its parent company, Gannett. D and C employees should be in a new space in the City of Rochester by mid-2014, says the article.
The D and C has downsized its staff and moved its printing presses to a site in Greece. Michael Kane, the paper’s president and publisher, says in this morning article that the company wants to “find a modern space for a mobile and digital-friendly workforce.”
D and C newsroom staff are optimistic that the move won’t mean layoffs.
“We have been filling open positions and hiring so we all hope that means layoffs and furloughs are in the past,” says Newspaper Guild Vice President Gary Craig.

All of the Left-wing media are shrinking. People will buy newspapers, but they won’t shell out cash for a liberal opinion sheet. The D&C, once a proud part of America’s tradition of a free press, has so degenerated that it is primarily an advocacy page for the Soros crowd. They see racism in everything, a Big Government answer to every problem, are disdainful of Republicans and conservatives, and openly contemptuous of anyone suggesting Louise Slaughter, Chuck Schumer, Andrew Cuomo or other liberal icons might be wrong about anything. No wonder their circulation has dropped like a rock. Maybe their new “offices” will be a van down by the river.
They’ve been covering Kodak so long, that now they’re copying them. Gannett has $100 million in real estate up for sale, according to this report – as of June 2012. They’re the Sears/K-Mart of the newspaper business, with real estate worth more than continuing operations.

This means more proceeds to pay rich executives, like CEO Gracia Martore.
The Gannett Blog says that “Gannett’s most senior executives have been awarded nearly 300,000 shares of company stock worth more than $5 million as part of their annual compensation, according to newly filed regulatory documents.” These guys could teach Antonio Perez a few lessons.
Bob S – Please provide back up for your statement that “all the Left-wing media are shrinking”. Of course were this true then it makes the incessant Right Wing ranting about the power and influence of the so-called Main Steam Media even more laughable than it is already.
What’s the surprise – In the past few years the Democrat & Chronicle had reduced the width of the paper – reduced the thickness of the paper – and reduced the staff of the paper – Now they want to reduce the size of the headquarters for the paper – Seems the only thing they’ve increased is the price of the paper.
“Shrinking ‘Left-wing” media”? Yup, the same paper whose op-ed page is an endless parade of C-list right wing pundits: Bill O’Reilly, Jonah Goldberg, Cal Thomas, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Suzanne Fields, Victor Davis Hanson, and a whole lot of others – and not a single bona fide leftist to be found. This is the same paper, founded by that arch-leftist Frank Gannett, that endorsed Nixon every one of the five times he ran for national office. This in a state where we voted for Obama 2 – 1 over Romney.
No matter how understandable from a purely economic perspective – it’s sad that the decline in Rochester originated businesses continues – Hickey Freman was sold to an out of state company (thrice) – Gannett moved its HQ out of town – Rochester Telephone was sold to an out of state company (twice) – Sibley’s was sold to an out of town company (twice) – Midtown crashed and burned – RG&E was sold to an out of state company- Paetec was sold to an out of state company – Kodak is sliding inexorably into the abyss – Bausch & Lomb is on the block – and now the D&C plans to sell off its home to become just another cube farm renter – At this rate City Hall will soon be selling the vowels from the city’s name – Welcome to RCHSTR.
