One of the most perplexing things about this election season has been trying to understand why some conservatives have such utter contempt for President Obama. The hatred has been there from the beginning, woven with threads of controversy and thinly veiled bigotry. There was the criticism over receiving the Nobel Prize, the birth certificate controversy, challenges about his religious beliefs, and the charges that he’s a socialist.

A lot of it is dismissible, coming from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, and Ann Coulter. They have a financial incentive to keep the Obama anger burning. But none of the accusations and conspiracy theories has been as unwarranted and asinine as the one that Jack Welch floated after the September jobs report was announced on Friday. The former chair of General Electric tweeted the latest conspiracy: the administration cooked the books to help get the president re-elected. That was Welch’s explanation for the drop in unemployment from 8.1 percent to 7.8, the first time unemployment has been below 8 percent in four years.

OK, it’s understandable that conservatives wouldn’t want good employment news to overshadow Mitt Romney’s strong debate performance only days earlier. Nor would they be happy that the news takes away one of Romney’s main talking points, that Obama failed to deliver one of his campaign promises. But world markets pay attention to this closely guarded data, and Welch’s response was inexcusable.

Welch accused Obama of Nixon-like illegalities without even an iota of evidence. Watch this exchange between MSNBC’s Chris Matthews and an unapologetic Welch on “Hardball.”

This has been a terrible recession, leaving many people unemployed for months, sometimes years. Some of these people have tried everything they can think of to find a new job, only to lose everything they’ve got. And it’s heartbreaking.

But in a race to deliver a knock-out blow to this president, Obama’s enemies are willing to disregard any possibility that his slow and steady economic recovery is working. And their capacity to trivialize the economic policies that brought on millions of job losses is telling.

I was born and raised in the Rochester area, but I lived in California and Florida before returning home about 12 years ago. I'm a vegetarian and live with my husband and our three pugs. I cover education,...

  1. “Some of these people have tried everything they can think of to find a new job, only to lose everything they’ve got. And it’s heartbreaking.”

But still not quite heartbreaking enough, apparently, for you to acknowledge the human costs of Obama’s staggering incompetence and hubris.

  2. There is no “birth certificate controversy”, its forged.

Google Maricopa County, AZ Sheriff’s Department and Obama forgery to ascertain numerous anomolies with not only the birth certificate but also the forged Selective Service Registration card.

All it takes is a few mouse clicks. If you continue to want to be used by this adminastration then just continue to pretend that its not forged.

  3. nychuck – Do you for one instance think….that if the Republican Nation Committee and their Far Right fellow travelers, having vastly greater financial resources and technical expertise to call on then some loonie-tune sheriff in West Podunk , Arizona, could have presented a credible case in 2008 or today that Obama’s birth certificate is a fake, that they would have declined to do so? Or are they part of the vast socialist , Muslim conspiracy (along with Hawaii’s Republican governor, Linda Lingle) ?

Oh, and I forgot, add to the conspiracy the members of the House of Representatives who in 2009 voted 378 -0 to approve a resolution commemorating Hawaiian statehood which included the line, “Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961″

By the way, can you tell us where the conspirators got hold of the time machine they used to go back to August 13 and 14, 1961 and insert Obama’s birth notices in both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin ?

  4. Anyone could put a notice in Hawaii newspaper and Obama grand parents undoubtedly did so he would be afforded U.S. citizenship benefits. This has been clearly demonstrated.

Ted Bundy could have published the report containing 30 anomolies o his birth certificate and Selective Service Registration. Take a couple of miutes of your time to look at the report and then come back here and tell us its not forged. Is that simple enough? Just look at it. The same way a bank teller would examine a document in cashing a large check . Or a bouncer checking someone’s identification for admittance to a club. Neither are Forensic documet examiners but there risking a lot of money if they make a mistake.

Just go look. Simple as that.
