In this classic operetta, W. S. Gilbert tackled political satire, concocting a story about a band of fairies who are determined to send one of their allies, a shepherd, as a member of Parliament. However, since the fairies control Parliament by magic, they have rendered the party system irrelevant! Arthur Sullivan’s score combines lighthearted fairy music with pomp and circumstance … and a touch of romance as well.
