Poetry Book Discussion Group: 5 Poets for 5 Days of the Week

These distinct voices offer windows into our week: poet laureate Joy Harjo’s powerful celebrations of and mourning for the Muscogee Creek Nation and all native peoples, expat poet Jack Gilbert’s direct yet lush lyrics of love and dying, Portuguese poet Gemma Gorga’s enigmatic tiny prose poems, Austin Smith’s elegant and dignified poems capturing American farm life, and Connie Wanek’s exquisite observations married to matters of the heart. Reading Power Play: Reading Program Sponsored by the Amerks

For Grades K-12. For every three books you read, you are entitled to enter the county-wide Amerks contest. Two grand prize-winners (one for grades K-5, one for grades 6-12) will receive box tickets to a February, 2020 Amerks game, a catered dinner in the President’s Lounge at the Blue Cross Arena that evening, and the chance to participate in the ceremonial dropping of the puck! The more you read, the more chances you have to win. Look for entry boxes near the teen area in late November.

For Grades 7-12. We welcome back April McCloud to present another empowering, yet fun workshop for teens. Learn how to protect ourselves through practical tips and hands-on self-defense techniques. Awareness and some preparation can make a big difference in a dangerous situation. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and come ready to learn new skills. Registration required.

Nutcracker Story Time

For Ages 3-10, with an adult. Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy are returning to the library. These company members of the Rochester City Ballet will appear in full costume to read the magical tale of Clara and her Nutcracker, act out some of their roles, and will be available for questions and photos after the reading. Tales for Tails

For Ages 3+ and Family (children under 7 must be with an adult). Did you know that even dogs like to listen to stories? Come read to real live therapy dogs from “Tales for Tails”. These specially trained dogs are very gentle and great listeners. Drop in – no registration required; you’ll sign up for reading time slots upon arrival.
Pete the Cat Is Coming to the Library!*

For Grades 3-5, with a parent. For the November meeting, please read Teddy Mars: Almost a World Record Breaker by Molly B.Burnham and come prepared to discuss your favorite parts. Led by our children’s librarian, Jennifer Caccavale, the group will meet monthly. Books are available at the circulation desk. No registration required. We will have a special gathering on Thursday, December 19 – more details to follow. Our next formal group meeting is Thursday, January 30.
