Richard B. Sheridan’s “The Rivals” is a comedy of unconventional wit, hilarious plot twists, and memorable characters, including Mrs. Malaprop. With a young lady wanting to marry for love over social advantage, a rich young man pretending poverty to woo her, plus more rivals for her affection, misunderstandings and mistaken identities flourish. First performed in 1775, the play’s focus on society’s dramatically changing attitudes and growing differences between generations was also true in the later 1920s. By setting RCP’s production in the Roaring ‘20s, “The Rivals” becomes both funnier and more relevant for audiences today. (March 24th matinee is ASL-interpreted.)
