So there I was, nursing the blood of the bean from a ceramic
chalice, watching the nubile cavalcade’s ebb and flow at Java’s on Gibbs
Street, when what to my wondering eyes appeared but perCepTION on stage kicking out the jams in hiiiiigh gear. This
outfit was tres cool with lots of exploratory spirit
that never went too far as its members were tethered to the earth and one
another.

Just when you thought a soloist wasn’t coming back, another
member jumped in and mirrored his melody precisely. Classic bop push and pull
and classic call and response. The funky back beat kept it fresh along with
some of the band’s emphasis on tones from creamy to crunchy … that’s my
perception, anyway.

perCepTION will perform again on Tuesday, September 23, at Java’s Cafe. 6 p.m. Free.
