In addition to performing three company shows at School of the Arts (the last show happens Saturday at 7 p.m.), several members of PUSH Physical Theatre produced solo works for Fringe. Jonathan Lowery, a longstanding member of Fringe who also performs in community theater productions around town, tapped further into his multidisciplinary roots with “Poetry in Motion,” a 45-minute production combining dance, mime, spoken word, and poetry.
Throughout the one man show, Lowery takes on more than 10 different roles and pulls from more than five different poems — most recognizable is Lewis Carroll’s "The Jabberwocky" — all while constantly moving around the circular stage of the Avyarium. Sound design, from chill house music to techno beats, provides an additional ambiance.
The Avyarium, which is a new, blackbox-esque venue on the second floor of Village Gate and home to WallByrd Theatre Co., proved an ideal setting for the experimental work. Though he was surrounded by audience on three sides, Lowery took the opportunity to capitalize on his impressive storytelling capabilities and never missed a beat or dropped character (even when there was a crying child somewhere out in the hall).
Hopefully, the members of PUSH continue to share their massive talents in other venues and with other companies around the city — but first, they’re off on a national tour right after Fringe.
