Week Ahead: Port project update, Lilac Fest starts

The Lilac Festival starts on May 6 and runs through May 15 at Highland Park. Music begins daily at 10:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. on the weekends) and runs through 8:30 p.m. All shows are free to the public.
The festival itself runs from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily and also includes the Lilac Parade, home and garden show, wine tasting and farmer’s market, 10K and 5K races, Art in the Park, daily children’s entertainment, and a variety of food vendors.
The City of Rochester will update the community on the status and next steps of the Port of Rochester mixed-used development project at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, May 2) during the Charlotte Community Association's general meeting. It will take place on the second floor of the Roger Robach Community Center, 188 Beach Avenue.
The commissioner of the city's department of Neighborhood and Business Development, Baye Muhammad; senior economic development specialist Rick Rynski; and planning and zoning director Zina Lagonegro will address the group.
The controversial project calls for a hotel, condos, and other development at the port, but critics say that the project is too big, too expensive, and unrealistic given the seasonal appeal of the port. They are also wary of privatizing what is now public land.
The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and Rochester City School District will sponsor Dr. Fania Davis, a national leader in racial healing and restorative justice, in two speaking engagements on Wednesday, May 4.
Davis is a well-known civil rights activist, attorney, scholar, and restorative justice advocate. Her first talk, “The Radical Work of Community Healing,” will be from 12:30-2 p.m., at REOC College at Brockport, 161 Chestnut Street, Rochester. Her evening engagement, “Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline,” will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Department of Criminal Justice, 1 Lomb Memorial Drive, Liberal Arts Building, Room A20.
