Blackfriars Theatre announces 2018-19 season

With each new season, Blackfriars Theatre seems to further test its own boundaries. In its 2017-18 season, the company set a mission to focus on more women artists and women-centered stories — to great success with its all-female "Twelfth Night," its holiday show, "Little Women," and the recent "When We Were Young and Unafraid."

The 2018-19 season, which was announced Tuesday, will continue to see the theater on East Main Street grow, build new collaborations, and do something unexpected. Read below for the 2018-19 season. Season subscriptions are now on sale, with options for the full season ($131 to $185); three- and four-show Flex Passes ($90 and $120); and a Show Day Pass ($140), which lets the holder book on the day-of. Blackfriars Theatre 2018-19 lineup

"A Chorus Line" (July 6 through July 15): The Blackfriars Theatre Summer Intensive will take on a production of the hit show about dancers auditioning for a spot on the chorus line of a Broadway musical.

"Anna in the Tropics" (September 7 through September 23): Blackfriars will partner with the Rochester Latino Theatre Company for this season opener. Set in 1929 Florida, workers in a Cuban-American cigar factory are read to and entertained by "lectors." When a new "lector" begins to read from "Anna Karenina," it sparks a change for the workers. Playwright Nilo Cruz won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for "Anna in the Tropics."

"The Rocky Horror Show" (October 26 through November 11): International Housewife Celebrity Mrs. Kasha Davis will slip on the fishnets as Dr. Frank N. Furter in Richard O'Brien's cult classic.

"The Last Night of Ballyhoo" (December 14 through December 31): Alfred Uhry's play, set in December 1939, follows a family of upper class, German Jews as they prepare for the lavish Ballyhoo, the season's major social event. Taking on heavy issues like prejudice, class, and family troubles, "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Play.

"Ordinary Days" (February 1 through February 17, 2019): The lives of four young New Yorkers intersect in humorous, memorable ways in Adam Gwon's musical "Ordinary Days."

"Mauritius" (March 22 through April 7, 2019): Tension arises between two half-sisters who inherit a book of rare stamps after their mother's death, in Theresa Rebeck's 2007 play.

"The Undeniable Sound of Right Now" (May 10 through May 26, 2019): Closing Blackfriars' 2018-19 season is Laura Eason's 2016 play about an iconic rock club trying to stay afloat in early-90's Chicago. The company is teasing a "full out rock club on stage, complete with a bar and live bands."
