Daily Choices: What to do on Friday, December 28

Recreation: It’s winter, and we’ve finally got the precipitation to show for it. Take advantage of the recent sky dump by participating in the Moonlight Snowshoe at Helmer Nature Center (154 Pinegrove Ave., Irondequoit) tonight, 7-9 p.m. The cost to participate is $5-$7, and this event is adults-only. For more information, call 336-3035 or visit westirondequoit.org/helmer.htm.

Music: Don’t miss Velvet Elvis tonight at the Main Street Armory (900 East Main St., rochestermainstreetarmory.com), bringing good friends Dream Girls, Green Dreams, and School Shootings along for the party. Music starts at 9 p.m., cover runs $5-$7.

Sports: Catch the Amerks vs. Lake Erie Monsters tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena (One Memorial Square). Tickets are $15-$20 and may be purchased through ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000. For more info, visit bluecrossarena.com.

Music: What I remember from my undergraduate days at Fredonia State University is limited to the approximate number of gin mills, watering holes, bootie bars, and what-have-you in a one-block radius of the campus — the total being somewhere around a dozen. Mr. Boneless, and the band’s collection of freaky folk songs, is right at home in any of these joints. Literally. This foursome met in the summer of 2010 in this small college town west of Buffalo and began to bludgeon the ears of unsuspecting house-party-goers. The band is heavily influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, The Misfits, Neil Young, and the Pixies, leaving the group’s sound to generally fall somewhere between punk and folk, with an alternative, bluesy edge. A penchant for the intriguing and unexpected transitions makes for impulsive and adventurous live performances. Mr. Boneless performs Friday, December 28, 9 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $6-$8. 454-2966, bugjar.com.

Theater: Blackfriars Theatre (795 E. Main St.) will host "An Evening of Andrew Lloyd Webber" tonight at 8 p.m., with additional shows each night through New Year’s Eve. The concert includes songs from Webber’s greatest hits alongside pieces from some of his lesser known works, including: The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, Evita, Sunset Boulevard, The Woman in White, Whistle Down the Wind, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cats. Tickets are $25. For more information, call 454-1260 or visit bftix.org.

Music: It’s Atlanta’s Jackson Rohm’s boredom that’ll save you from yours. Rohm rolls well within the contemporary pop/country idiom, dipping his wheels in rock ’n’ roll grease. Rohm barnstorms the United States a la carte, his songs fleshed out and dressed up in a beautiful, detailed Americana. On disc and backed up, the man has the stain of the hardcore troubadour on his hands. It ain’t “Copperhead Road,” but it ain’t country fluff either. Good stuff. Jackson Rohm plays Friday, December 28, at 5 p.m. at Johnny’s Irish Pub, 1382 Culver Road. Free. 224-0990, johnnysirishpub.com.

Theater: At 7 p.m. tonight, Downstairs Cabaret Theatre will host a staging of “The Man in Black,” in which Robert Shaw and musicians from his Lonely Street Band, as well as Teagan and the Tweeds, will play the tunes of Johnny Cash. The show takes place at the 20 Windsor Street location and continues through Sunday. Tickets are $29-$33. For more information, call 325-4370, or visit downstairscabaret.org.

Music: Honey Badger might not care, but here’s an event you should care about. Tonight you’ll be able to check out rock and rollers The Honey Badgers live at Sticky Lips (830 Jefferson Rd., stickylipsbbq.com). Doors open at 8:30 p.m., tickets cost $5 in advance and $10 at the door, so plan early and save yourself some dough.
