HOLIDAY | Kwanzaa Activities 

Kwanzaa began Tuesday, December 26, and continues through January 1, and in Rochester, daily activities have been organized around the city by the Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition. On Wednesday, December 27, the day recognizing the principle Kujichagulia (self-determination), the Memorial Art Gallery (500 University Avenue; 276-8900; mag.rochester.edu) will host a Kwanzaa Family Fun Day, noon to 5 p.m. There will be a ceremony led by the Kwanzaa Coalition, an historical reenactment titled "Moses and the King: Sister Harriet Tubman and Rev. Jermain Wesley Loguen," a Roc Poetry Collective performance, and tours of the MAG. There is a $5 per family suggested donation.

The Kwanzaa Coalition will celebrate Ujima (collective work and responsibility) at the Wheatley Library (33 McCree Way; 428-8212) on Thursday, December 28, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The next day, Friday, December 29, the RCTV program "Ujamaa Rising" will air a live episode from the Rochester Museum and Science Center (657 East Avenue; 271-4320; rmsc.org). Hosted by Jessica Lewis and featuring black community leaders discussing cooperative economics.

Ending the week of activities, events have been organized at the David F. Gantt R-Center (700 North Street; 428-7149) on Saturday, December 30, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., to recognize Nia (purpose); and at the Memorial AME Zion Church (549 Clarissa Street; 546-5997) on Sunday, December 31, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., for Kuumba (creativity).
