The new Oxford's

What a difference a makeover makes

Dressing up Oxford's

I may be behind the times, but I just recently came across Blue Moon white Belgian beer. It's spectacular in a way only beer can be. Previously, it would be a rare treat to pick it up from the fancy-pants Pittsford Wegmans or Beers of the World. However, I have found my fix, among other imported beers, at the newly remodeled Oxford's on Monroe. And yes, I am sure this beer is everywhere, but something just made it taste sweeter at Oxford's, with new owner Marty Cordy.

Perhaps it was the clean and polished feel of the place --- according to Cordy, "everything is new and updated." He's right: new bar stools, sparkling new tables, chairs, and flat-screen televisions. Or maybe it was the way the new wood chairs and tables glistened like the afterglow of sex instead of holding the grime from patrons past, fingerprints of drudgery all over them. Nevertheless, for most of us, Oxford's presents the perfect place to sit, watch the game, play some pool, and down a few Blue Moons. It's the sophisticated version of a "bar-bar," and I love it. Stop in any day of the week from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.
I'm guessing most of you don't associate Nola's BBQ on Lake Avenue with nightlife. (Personally, I'm always reminded of the moist towelettes that come with the rib basket.) Brace yourself, and prepare to be amazed, as inside Nola's The Velvet Room will openFriday, December 15. Every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., The Velvet Room will be looking to party. A strict dress code will be enforced, and only those reaching the golden age of 25 and over will be allowed access.

The folks at Nola want to appeal to an older crowd, get people together who appreciate the tunes from the '70s, '80s and '90s. "Smack That" by Akon and Eminem will most likely not be playing, and frankly I could use a night without it. I think. Regardless, as The Velvet Room promotes, "Turn Back the Clock and Regain you Nightlife." Sounds like an early New Year's resolution to me.
