CLASSICAL | "Contemporary Vignettes"

The Society for Chamber Music's smorgasbord approach to programming is yielding some tasty concerts, and this weekend's "Contemporary Vignettes" is definitely appealing. It begins with an "Epitaph for Jean Harlow" by Charles Koechlin, the prolific 20th-century composer enamored of old-time Hollywood stars, and ends with the ubiquitous Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango." In between are up-to-the-minute works by John Anthony Lennon, Evan Chambers, Joseph Makholm -—- and the premiere of "Ports of Call (A Mediterranean Suite)" for violin, flute, and guitar by Sam Adler, longtime chair of Eastman's composition department and still an active composer. Performers include saxophonist Chien-Kwan Lin, flutist Rebecca Gilbert, violinist Renée Jolles, guitarist Nicholas Goluses, and pianist Tony Caramia.

Society for Chamber Music in Rochester presents "Contemporary Vignettes" on Sunday, December 14, at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue. 7:30 p.m. Pre-concert talk begins 30 minutes before. $30. Students free with ID. 377-6770, societyforchambermusicrochester.com.
