This weekend, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 90th season with a program of music from its first season, including Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 1 (the "Nordic" symphony). Hanson (1896-1981) was an American composer, conductor, and music educator, who was the director of the Eastman School of Music from 1924 to 1964. Also expect works by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Goossens, and Korngold. This season includes comfortable favorites like pianist Jon Nakamatsu performing Grieg's Piano Concerto (10/18 & 10/20), a celebration of Debussy's 150th birthday (10/25 & 10/27), and deeper emotional works like Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 (the "Pathétique" symphony). This is conductor Arild Remmereit's second season with the RPO.
The RPO season opener is Thursday, October 4, 7:30 p.m. & Saturday, October 6, 8 p.m., Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St. | $15-$82 | 454-2100, RPO.org
