River vigil

The Rochester Zen Center will hold a public, silent vigil for the Genesee River from noon to 2 p.m. on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, on the High Falls pedestrian bridge. The vigil is meant to raise awareness of pollution in the Genesee. Organizers say participants may want to bring chairs. More information: rzc.org/earthvigil

Earth Day at RIT

Undergraduate and graduate teams from the student competition GreenovateNYS will be exhibiting at RIT's free Earth Day event, which beings at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22. Posters will be on display from the K-12 Student Poster Competition. Winners will be chosen during the event at the LEED Platinum Certified Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT, 1 Lomb Memorial Drive. Plus: industry speakers, local organizations, and more.

Tinker Nature Park

The Earth Day event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Hansen Nature Center, 1525 Calkins Road, Henrietta. Featuring at 11 a.m.: World of Wildlife Educational Encounters: Howling at the Moon. The program will give general information about wolves, their habits, habitats, and the role they play in the ecosystem. A live wolf ambassador will be visiting the nature center. Additional activities include wetland studies with RIT environmental science students, and more.

Abundance Cooperative

The co-op celebrates its Earth Day birthday from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. Samples and special discounts will be offered, plus displays highlighting the co-op's history, which began in 1968. Many other local and sustainably-minded businesses and organizations will be in attendance, such as Fruition Seeds, Once Again Nut Butters, and Peacework CSA. Food trucks and other activities highlighting ecologically-sound living will be part of the event, too. In conjunction with Earth Day, Abundance will host a talk exploring green schools in Rochester with Jan McDonald, director of Rochester Roots, on Thursday, April 24. Abundance is at 62 Marshall Street in Rochester.

Wayside Garden Center

Wayside's Earth Day event, Terrariums with Eric Matthew, is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22. Come for Eric's presentation, and then stay for an optional workshop to make your own living biosphere using Wayside's materials and plants. Lecture-workshop is free. Pay only for what you use. Sierra Club forum

The Rochester Sierra Club will hold an Earth Day forum, Climate Smart Communities: Let's Get With the Program, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, at First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Road South. The forum includes a community conversation with Mark Lowery, climate policy analyst for the state DEC's Office of Climate Change.

Fracking film

Triple Divide, a new film about fracking, will be shown at the Flying Squirrel Community Space, 285 Clarissa Street in Rochester. The event is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. Triple Divide's title represents one of only four triple continental divides in North America, a place that provides drinking water to millions of Americans and feeds rivers that reach three separate sides of the continent, signaling to the audience that everything and everyone is downstream from shale gas extraction.

Center for Environmental Initiatives

Green Drinks is a monthly networking event held by the Center for Environmental Initiatives. People in the environmental field and the sustainably minded meet over drinks in an informal setting to exchange ideas, find out who's doing what, spread the word on what you're doing, find employment leads, and make new friends. It's from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21, at the RIT Inn & Conference Center, Charades Lounge, 5257 West Henrietta Road.

Rochester Greenovation

Explore the current state of the planet through group interactions and multimedia. The free event, part of Earth Week, sponsored by Rochester Greenovation, is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at 1199 East Main Street. RSVP to Paola Betchart by April 25, [email protected].
