This story has been corrected. The State Education Department has sent a letter (see below) to Rochester schools superintendent Bolgen Vargas, saying that major changes are required at East High School. The SED says that the district's options include closing and re-opening the school, phasing it out, or converting it to a charter school. 

A three-year plan to turn around East High School began under former superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard. But that plan has failed, the SED says. 

No other schools have been flagged by the SED at this time, says schools spokesperson Chip Partner. 

UPDATE, 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, March 19:

District officials have to submit their plan for East to the SED by April 30.

School officials will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, in the auditorium at East High, 1801 East Main Street, to discuss the matter. The school board is also planning a separate meeting to get input from parents and residents on what they would like to see happen at East. That meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8.

The SED acted in a similar manner with the Buffalo school district several months ago. When Buffalo school officials couldn't arrive at an acceptable approach to improve two schools, the SED stepped in and shifted management of the schools to outside entities.
