Urban Action 5/13

This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Mothers group discusses oil trains

Mothers Out Front will host "Bakken Oil Trains," a public forum at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. The trains carry hazardous materials from the North Dakota region through Upstate New York. They pass through communities that have no knowledge of their contents, which means that the communities may be unprepared for safety problems in the event of crashes or derailments. Sandy Steubing of People of Albany United for Safe Energy, the Albany-based organization that is building awareness about the trains, will lead the discussion. The event will be held at Brighton Memorial Library, 2300 Elmwood Avenue.

Native plant sale

The Genesee Land Trust will hold its annual native plant sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. More than a dozen nurseries contribute to the event, which offers varieties of plants that grow naturally in this region. The sale is held at Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue.

GCC seeks public input

The Genesee Community College campus centers in Albion and Medina are seeking public input on how the centers are meeting the higher education needs of the region. School officials want to know if the courses and class times are attractive to students from the area. The staff-developed survey is available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/GCCOrleans. It will take about five minutes to complete. People who answer the 10 questions are also entered to win a prize. The survey closes on Friday, June 12.

Open house on the zoo master plan

Monroe County will hold a public open house on the Seneca Park Zoo master plan from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19. The event provides an opportunity for review and comment on the conceptual designs for future improvements to the zoo. Design boards and facilitators will be stationed in the areas designated for improvements. The event will be held at Seneca Park, 2222 St. Paul Street.
