Urban Action 8/31

This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Discussing Guatemala's future

The Rochester Committee on Latin America will present "Is This a Revolution? Reflections on Guatemala's 2015 – a Remarkable Year of Public Protests and Political Upheaval" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7. Guatemalans, outraged by rampant corruption at the highest level of government, took to the streets in 2015 and ousted their elected president. Activist Paul Ciavarri questions whether this mini-revolution has made a difference in the lives of everyday people. Ciavarri taught English in Guatemala City and has supported labor and social justice efforts. The event will be held at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street.

Workshops tackle racism

The YWCA's Racial Equity Department will present "Unconscious Bias," a workshop series designed to encourage conversations on race and the causes of systemic racism. The workshops will raise many questions: What is America's melting pot identity? What does it mean to be white in this country? How do we eliminate racism and stand up for social equity? There are two sets of workshops. One group will meet for seven weeks, on Fridays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., starting on Friday, October 7. A second set of workshops involves meeting for eight weeks on Tuesdays, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting on Tuesday, October 4. Cost for each series of workshops is $250 per person. The discussions are guided by experienced facilitators. Information and registration: 368-2212 or email: [email protected]
